AdSense Payment Failed After a Bank Change: How to Get It Back

A failed AdSense payment is not lost, but it does not return to your balance until your bank sends the rejected transfer back, and Google then reissues it, which Google says can take 2 to 3 weeks. Update your bank details before the 20th, ask your bank to return the rejected payment, and contact AdSense support if nothing is reissued 15 business days after that.

A failed AdSense payment is stressful because the money seems to vanish. It was issued, it never reached you, and it is not back in your balance either. In most cases nothing is lost. The payment is sitting somewhere between Google, an intermediary bank and your bank, and it comes back through a specific process that you can speed up. This guide walks through that process for the most common cause: your bank details changed (a new SWIFT code, a closed account, a merged bank) after you entered them in AdSense.

Why the money is not back in your balance

When AdSense issues a payment, a line appears on your Payments page and the amount leaves your balance. From Google's side the payment has gone out. If your bank or an intermediary bank rejects it, the funds have to travel back before Google can do anything with them. Google's wire transfer FAQ says plainly that AdSense support cannot ask for a payment to be returned to your account. Your bank returns the funds, and then Google reissues the payment.

That is why a common situation looks so confusing. You fix your bank details before the 20th, next month's payment arrives on time, but the older amount is still shown as issued and is not part of the new payment. The new payment only contained the new month's earnings. The old payment is still in transit back from the bank that rejected it, and it gets reissued separately once it lands.

Google's own figures for how long this takes:

  • A failed wire can take up to 2 to 3 weeks before it is reissued.
  • If you entered wrong details and your bank cancels the payment, recall and reissue takes around 15 business days.
  • Wrong intermediary bank information can delay a wire by as long as three months.
  • For EFT payments returned from a closed account, the money is credited back to your AdSense balance in a few days, and if a new verified account is on file the whole process takes about a week.

The payment calendar that decides everything

Most of the confusion around failed payments comes from the monthly cycle, so it helps to have the dates in front of you:

  • Around the 3rd: last month's earnings are finalized and posted to your balance.
  • The 20th: the cutoff. Payment method changes and removal of payment holds must be done on or before the 20th. Changes after the 20th wait for the next month. Your balance on the 20th must also be over the payment threshold.
  • 21st to 26th: payments are issued and a "Payment pending" line appears.
  • After issue: a wire usually arrives within three business days, but Google says to allow up to 15 business days. EFT arrives within seven business days.

So if your bank changed its SWIFT code on, say, the 15th and you only updated AdSense on the 22nd, that month's payment went to the old details and the fix only applies from next month. The rejected payment still has to come back on its own track.

Step by step: getting a failed payment reissued

  1. Confirm the new details are correct. In AdSense, go to Payments > Payments info > Manage payment methods. You cannot edit an existing bank account. Google's instruction is to add a new bank account, then remove the old one. AdSense support cannot edit it for you. Enter the details exactly as your bank has them on file: Latin characters only, no hyphens in the account number, and a SWIFT code from the same country as the account. The bank must also be in the same country as your payments address.
  2. Check for a hold. If you see a red alert that says your payments are on hold, the payment method is the usual fix and the alert links straight to it. Any hold still active on the 20th means no payment that month and the balance rolls over.
  3. Call your bank, not Google, first. Ask whether an incoming international transfer from Google was rejected or is held, and when it was sent back. Give them the date range of the issue window (21st to 26th of the month it was issued) and the amount from your Payments page. If the money reached an account that is closed or wrong, ask the bank to cancel or return it. Google cannot reissue a payment that reached a valid account, so the bank has to send it back.
  4. Write down what the bank tells you. You want the return date and any reference number. You will need it if you have to escalate.
  5. Wait 15 business days from the bank's return. Google's wire FAQ says to contact AdSense support after 15 business days have passed and you have contacted your bank. Use the payments troubleshooter in the AdSense Help Center and include the payment amount, the issue date, the bank's return date and the reference.
  6. Watch the Transactions page. In AdSense, open Payments > Payments info > View transactions and set the date range to cover the last three months. A returned payment shows up as a credit back to your account, then a new payment line when it is reissued.

If you get paid by paper check rather than bank transfer, the process is different: a "Reissue payment" link appears on the transaction only after 60 days, and an expired check credits the money back and puts payments on hold until you act.

How to stop it happening again

  • Treat bank notices as AdSense tasks. When your bank announces a new SWIFT code, a merger or a new account number, update AdSense the same week, and always before the 20th.
  • Keep the old account open for one cycle. If you are switching banks, add the new account, let one payment land in it, and only then close the old one. A payment sent to a closed account is the slowest kind to recover.
  • Ask your bank about intermediary details. Some banks, especially outside the US and EU, need an intermediary bank for USD wires. Wrong intermediary information is the case where delays run to months, so ask your bank for the exact intermediary SWIFT before you enter it.
  • Screenshot your payment settings. A dated screenshot of what you entered and when makes a support case far quicker if a payment fails again.

While you wait, check the site that earns it

A payment problem is a good moment to check that the site itself is healthy, because a stuck payment often gets noticed at the same time as falling RPM or a policy email. Look at the Policy center in AdSense for any warnings, and confirm your ads.txt is still served at the root of your domain with your publisher ID in it. You can test the file in a terminal:

curl -s https://yourdomain.com/ads.txt | grep pub-

If that returns nothing, AdSense may limit ad serving on top of your payment issue. For a quick structural check of the whole site, you can run your URL through the free site checker, which covers ads.txt, indexing basics and page speed signals in one pass.

The short version: a failed AdSense payment is almost always recoverable, but it moves on the bank's schedule, not Google's. Fix the details before the 20th, get your bank to send the rejected transfer back, and give it 15 business days before you escalate.

Where this question came from

Questions about failed AdSense payments

Why was my new AdSense payment missing last month's failed amount?

The new payment only covered the latest month. The failed one is still on its way back from the bank that rejected it, and Google reissues it separately once the funds return.

Can AdSense support pull a failed payment back into my balance?

No. Google's wire transfer FAQ says support cannot ask for a payment to be returned. Your bank has to return or cancel it, and then Google reissues it.

When do new bank details take effect in AdSense?

Changes made on or before the 20th of the month apply to that month's payment. Changes after the 20th wait until the following month's cycle.

How long does a reissued AdSense payment take?

Google says a failed wire can take up to 2 to 3 weeks to be reissued, around 15 business days if your bank cancels a payment sent to wrong details, and up to three months if intermediary bank details were wrong. A returned EFT to a closed account takes about a week when a new verified account is on file.
